Description

In recent years, many new generic compression libraries (e.g. bzip2, xz, lzma, zopfli (gzip-compatible output!)) have become available offering better performance and/or compression ratios than libz. We should give them a try and see whether we can benefit from any of them. In particular, it will be important to see how additional compression time trades off with reduced write time. Other factors to consider include memory usage and library availability.
